To My Friend

This past Saturday night, around midnight or so, I received a phone call from my brother. It was great to hear from him, but the message he had for me wasn’t so pleasant. He asked if I remembered our friend [insert first name] “you know, [insert last name]” I did remember him, of course. He then went on to tell me that his mother had passed away. My initial reaction was Oh No. It’s always sad news when you first hear about someone moving on from this life. It’s better to ponder on the positives though.

Dear Friend, [You know who you are]

I’m so sorry to hear about your mom passing on. She is a great, dear lady, but I’m sure you know that. You and I have similar relationships with our mothers. Many would call us “Momma’s Boys”, and we would both gladly accept such a moniker. We love our mothers and would do anything for them, and vice versa.

You also know that you were not your mother’s only son. She had many, including myself. Each time I see her we get caught up in a conversation about me being “one of her boys”. I know I’m not the only one she feels this way about. Back in “the day” when we would end up at the same “watering hole” she would offer me a ride home at the end of the night, if I needed it. There were a few times that I did need it, and I took her up on the offer. It is much appreciated. There’s no telling what would have happened if I had not. I can also recall a time when I gave her a ride home, when she needed it. I do believe she has one of the most comfortable couches…ever.

We’ve both had our problems in each of our short(ish) lives, and we’ve both come out of it ahead. I know that your mother is proud of the man you’ve become. I know that she loves you with all she has. I refuse to speak of her in the past tense because I know she is not gone, she is just merely waiting. This knowledge is comforting to me, and I hope to lend some comfort to you also. I know she is no longer suffering. I know that when the time comes she will again have a perfect body.

Her smile can light up a room, but it is now lighting up all of Heaven.

1) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2) In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. ~ John 14: 1-3
